Lincoln's Log | Page 4 | Volume 1 - 010 Location Services by SOTI SOTI MobiControl is the leading Mobile Device Management, Helpdesk, Security and Tracking solution built using SOTI's award- winning technology. MobiControl optimizes mobile operations and productivity with its rapid and reliable performance, functioning over any network, with any size deployment. Location Services, a core MobiControl feature, offers the advanced capabilities needed to locate, track and gather historical information about your GPS- enabled devices, regardless of geographic location. These capabilities enable organizations with devices in the field to track where their devices are and how they are being used, continuously. This ultimately facilitates loss prevention and eliminates the abuse of device protocol. MobiControl's Location Services also features breadcrumbing, its function for constructing a trail of the route created during the collection of GPS coordinates, and geofencing, a sophisticated alert system that requires mobile devices to follow certain parameters when entering or exiting specified areas. In addition, enhanced location- based security policies allow and restrict the usage of particular device features and applications depending on geographic coordinates. With devices in the field, Location Services provides real- time tracking and mapping that integrates with Microsoft's Virtual Earth. While tracking a device, the MobiControl console can retrieve the postal address of the device's current location and transmit driving directions to the device. Moreover, the reporting features work in conjunction with Location Services to enable users to collect data and historical information about devices that can be used to streamline usage and operations. Compatible with all Windows CE, Windows 7, XP and Vista devices equipped with GPS capabilities, MobiControl offers the most comprehensive Location Services functionality available in mobile device management technology today. It completes the total MobiControl solution without requiring additional fees or modules. AbeTech Solutions RFID Has Become an Economical Asset Tracker We're all aware of the benefits and expense related to using RFID technology to track assets. What you might not be aware of is that the cost of implementing RFID technology has decreased. So much so, that tracking assets with RFID has become more viable for many companies. The cost of UHF Gen 2 RFID is decreasing, thanks to price declines of 70% for tags and 50% for readers over the past three years. The price of a Gen 2 passive tag ranges from 20 cents to over ten dollars for a ruggedized, encapsulated model. This price difference has opened doors to companies interested in adopting passive, UHF ( ultra high frequency operating in the 900 mHz band) technology based on the EPC Gen 2 protocol. It enables simple, affordable tracking of assets as diverse as file folders, pallets, library books, electronic equipment and PCs - virtually any item imaginable. Passive RFID tags also allow you to track equipment at far lower cost and with less ongoing maintenance, as well as help you control access to more valuable assets and achieve more precise chains of custody. In the past, comparisons of HF ( high frequency operating in the 13.56 mHz band) and UHF found that HF was able to read in the vicinity of metals and liquids where UHF would not. Advances in UHF tag engineering have largely eliminated this difference. Passive UHF tags are now proven on metal, liquids and other applications that were not feasible five years ago. One " take- away" from this article for you: while active RFID, WiFi, HF and bar code technologies each have their place for applications with large numbers of tags and medium range requirements, passive Gen 2 RFID delivers another viable option. Based on your application, it could even provide the best performance for the lowest cost of ownership. To help figure it all out, contact your AbeTech account executive. We have the experts on staff to help define your needs and design a solution around them - whether using bar codes or RFID. Lincoln's Log | Page 5 | Volume 1 - 010 Wireless Designed for Branches It's here: the Motorola RFS4000 Series, providing a single platform solution for wireless services at branch facilities. Specifically designed to meet the networking needs of small to medium branch offices, the features of the RFS4000 eliminate the need for onsite IT support for wireless deployment and day- to- day management. As a part of Motorola's SMART Branch portfolio ( see sidebar), the RFS4000 series enables organizations with virtually any technical situation to have " home office quality" wireless services. Built on Motorola's standard platform, the RFS4000 is designed to provide a low cost, low maintenance branch network solution. Technically speaking, the RFS4000' s new integrated services controller includes five 802.3af and 802.3at ( draft) PoE ( power over Ethernet) ports and manages up to six dependent or adaptive access points ( APs) - sufficient to meet the networking needs of branch offices with 1 to 500 users. To eliminate the need for IT support and day- to- day management, the following features were included in the RFS4000: . Built- in intelligence that allows the network to identify and automatically address network issues . 3- click installation . Zero- touch AP plug and play . The integration of all wireless networking infrastructure into a single device that is easily managed back in the network operation center via auto- discovery and auto-configuration. The Motorola RFS4000 802.11n Integrated Services Controller integrates wired, wireless and security networking features into a compact and easy- to- use form factor, enabling organizations to create survivable branch networks using a single platform. The RFS4000 Series offers built- in applications such as occasioning for Wi- Fi and RFID, as well as hotspot and VoWLAN/ video services. With built- in 3G backhaul wireless WAN services, the RFS4000 supports rapid deployment and unprecedented network uptime and site survivability.
